About the Author
Mike McRoberts discovered the Arduino in 2008 while looking for ways to connect a temperature sensor to a PC to make a cloud detector for his other hobby astrophotography. After a bit of research, the Arduino seemed like the obvious choice, and the cloud detector was successfully made, quickly and cheaply. Mike s fascination with the Arduino had begun. Since then he has gone on to make countless projects using the Arduino. He had also founded an Arduino starter kit and component online business called Earthshine Electronics. His next project is to use an Arduino-based circuit to send a high altitude balloon up to the edge of space to take stills and video for the heck of it, with the help of the guys from the U.K. High Altitude Society and CUSF. Mike s hobby of electronics began as a child when the 100-in-1 electronics kits from Radio Shack made up his Christmas present list. He started programming as a hobby when he obtained a Sinclair ZX81 computer as a teenager. Since then, he s never been without a computer. Recently, he s become a Mac convert. He is a member of London Hackspace and the Orpington Astronomical Society and can regularly be found contributing to the Arduino Forum. He also likes to lurk on IRC in the Arduino, high altitude and london-hack-space channels (as earthshine ), and on Twitter @TheArduinoGuy. When he is not messing around with Arduinos or running Earthshine Electronics, he likes to indulge in astronomy, astrophotography, motorcycling, and sailing.

The Best All-Around Book For The Arduino Beginner
By Ira Laefsky
I own approximately 10 books centered around the popular Arduino Open Hardware Micro-controller and have reviewed at least 5 of them. This handbook now entering its Second Edition is without question the best text for a beginner. It covers 50 experiments in detail. It begins at the beginning with explanation of code, electronics and full documentation of the parts required. It can be comprehended by anyone with a secondary school education and each experiment is fully documented with a parts list, wiring instructions, an explanation of the hardware's operation and fully explained code listings. The experiments are engaging. They start gently (like most Arduino texts) with an LED flasher, but unlike other beginning texts they proceed through such advanced topics as: ultrasonic ranging, data logging to an SD Card, use of an Internet of Things Data Service, and an Internet connected weather station. The text has been fully updated for current versions of the Arduino IDE, current versions of hardware, and current Internet utilities such as Xively.

The author who has been experimenting with Arduino since 2008 (for instrumenting astrophotography experiments) is the founder of an Arduino-centered parts supplier known as Earthshine Electronics and is a member of London's Hackspace. All code listings, as well as color illustrations of the experiment's setup are downloadable from the book's entry on the Apress website. I highly recommend this book not only for the Arduino beginner but for its extensive documentation of most important topics in microcontroller experimentation.

Very good strongly recommended
By Y. Dai
Very good strongly recommended for teenage, univ student as well as adults. Teach you both s/w and h/w and Arduino IDE/libs. Nothing is perfect through, things would be better if:
1. add circuit diagram for each project, w/o it it would be hard to understand, nor gives chance for people to learn.
2. add comparison chart for other Arduino boards, incase people use mega2560, nano or so.
3. add reference of most arduino IDE/lib, so people has an overview of functions and language syntax.

Good balance between gratification and depth
By valleyman
Beginning Arduino is my goto book for inspiration when I teach children about Arduino. This happens to be the first book that I borrowed from library. However, my purchase was not based on first impression, for I had read several other beginner titles. McRoberts' book has a good balance between utility and depth. Here, let me pause and qualify "beginner".

As a friend declared, this book is not for children. A beginner in hacking with Arduino is someone like me, who has general knowledge - even skills about circuitry but does not make circuits or hardware products for a living, a fair amount of programming experience but does not program or make software for a living. In other words, someone who needs to transform general knowledge into broadened view and specific skills.

The selection of projects is well thought out, mostly involving inexpensive (mass produced) components that can be used for other purposes. The selection also covers a wide range of design elements. Each project is related to a real-life application, but the book makes no attempt at complete DIY projects. Instead, the author first explains practical procedures - both hardware assembly and "sketch". They are followed by some in-depth pointers about intricacies used in the design, either circuitry or programming. So if you do not have time, you can make the project quickly. Meanwhile, you can gain more insight when reading the finer points.

In other words, this is a good "bridging" book for a beginner.
