Can't Let Go? I Don't Think He's Ever Tried To Hold On
By Mary L. Valley
This was a mostly enjoyable story, but had a hero who needed to be kicked to the curb--after he was kicked on the shins a few times. I know I'm overly fond of shin kicks, but sometimes you just keep running into people who need their shins kicked. It's not my fault, really.

So, this is a heroine who comes from an abusive, alcoholic and drug abusing mother who makes her living getting pregnant and blackmailing her wealthy and married lovers to keep their wives from finding out they've been straying. The heroine has managed to extract herself from this toxic environment and make something of herself by opening and running an upscale boutique and continues to keep an eye on her younger half-sister who is still with their shared mother. She fell in love and moved in with the man (our hero) who put up the money for her start up and remains a silent partner in her business. Opposed to their relationship is the hero's mentor who seems to hate the heroine and is not shy about letting her know she is not worthy of the hero's attentions whenever he is not around. The plot thickens here.

When the sister calls the heroine for help, she is forced to step between her sister and her mother who likes to make her points to her daughters by slapping them around. Both escape the mother with some bruises and the heroine brings her sister to the penthouse she shares with the hero while she sorts out the sister's problems. However the younger sister is pregnant, a fact the heroine confirms with a test and both the mother and the baby's father want her sister to terminate the pregnancy, neither care what the sister wants. The heroine waits for the man she loves to come home so she can consult with him and get his opinion on how best to protect her sister's future. Boy, does she get a surprise.

The hero finds the pregnancy test first and draws some ugly conclusions. He confronts the heroine and accuses her of trying to trap him, just as his mentor said she would, and lets her know in gutter terms what he thinks of her, that he is aware of her family situation--courtesy of his mentor, that he will remove the child from such a grasping and unworthy mother and then slams out. The stunned heroine does what any self-respecting woman would do, she leaves. The hero returns the next day to apologize, but it's too late--she's gone and she intends to stay gone. He spends a year trying to get her back and explain, that he really didn't mean it when he was telling her what a no account, low life, scum of the earth wh@re (ammy restriction) she was. It seems some people just take these kinds of things so personally.

That is where the book begins. The hero is stalking the heroine in a very genteel, upper class way trying to get her to relent; she is avoiding him whenever possible and has relocated her sister from New York to Texas to keep her out of their mother's orbit and is considering moving there herself; and, oh yeah, the hero's mentor still hates her--really REALLY hates her. At least now she knows why, he is her father and has been blackmailed since the heroine's birth by mommy to finance her habit. Her mother thinks it's a fine joke.

The sister is killed by a drunk driver, leaving the heroine bereft and the custodian of a young baby. Hero steps into the breach to try and win some forgiveness points. The mentor throws a spanner into the works by withholding further money from mommy unless the heroine stops seeing the hero, so mommy decides she may as well try for custody of the baby for what she can get from her daughter. Hero makes his move by telling the heroine they must marry in order to stave off the custody bid. Daddy/mentor blows and hero catches him beating the heroine and has to rescue her. Lots of excitement, but it falls apart a little here.

At the hospital, where a bruised and traumatized heroine needs some support the hero...yells at her for not telling him the mentor was his father and leaves her there, alone. He hires bodyguards and insists heroine and baby move back into his penthouse but otherwise ignores the heroine, then he leaves when they get there. When the heroine tries to call him, he tells her not to bother him and hangs up. After a week of this, the heroine finds her spine again and leaves for Texas.

At this point, the "child becomes seriously ill and has to be rushed to the hospital to allow the hero to reinsert himself without having the heroine flatten his head with a skillet" plot device is rolled out. While the heroine is with her niece, prior to the hero's tardy arrival, she learns that her mother is dead of an overdose. Another blow for her to absorb, but it has a silver lining. She takes this as a sign that she no longer needs to marry the hero and gives him back his ring when he finally makes an appearance. Since she was in a hospital with witnesses and there was no skillet handy, it's probably the best she could do under the circumstances. If it were me, I'd probably start toting around a larger bag so I could have that skillet handy cuz she's going to need it since this hero seems to react to crises by yelling at the heroine and running away for a while. The rest of the tale consists of the hero convincing the heroine he loves her and insisting, "he never meant to be away so long she thought he was never coming back." Really?!?

Don't get me wrong, it was a very interesting book and I enjoyed it (although I really wanted this guy's shins kicked), but I thought the ending was weak. The heroine had been strong in not taking the hero's...solid waste product (another ammy concession) for the first offense, but let him talk her around after the second, and in my opinion, worse offense. Maybe she was getting tired, maybe she was still shell shocked from everything, but he needed to work harder to regain his ground. That's why it's not a five star.

For those who are sensitive to sexual situations, yes there is some sex. There is not a lot of sex and it's relatively mild, but it's there. The text is almost entirely free of typos, a big thank you for that and there was angst coming out all the character's ears for those who are looking for it. With a stronger ending, it would have been better, but it was still a very decent read. If only the hero had received some kicks...maybe next time.

on the fence
By Ana RC
This was a tough book to like. On one hand I loved how he pursued her and tried to get her forgiveness. But just as things get better another problems comes up and he act like a total jerk. My gosh she was attacked and injured and he is mad at her. I love happy endings but part of me wanted her to dump him. The book did keep my interest but the love interest didn't.

2 1/3 Stars
By Robin Wilson
This has all the elements for a gripping story: girl from the wrong side of the tracks who makes good; rich, powerful guy; cute baby; drunken mother; evil father, etc. So what needs to be there to make it successful?

First, the author needs to brush up on her verb tenses, especially the "perfect," to make the references less jarring. The writing is quite choppy at times. Second, the heroine runs hot and cold towards the hero, and he is the same towards her. One minute they're panting after each other; the next, they're throwing distrust left and right. Third, the baby seems to be the big draw at making them a couple--"instalove" once he meets her. SPOILER+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Why then, does the hero abandon her and the baby for a week at a time whenever something upsets him? He does this even after the h has been attacked by someone close to both of them. The baby has just lost her mother. Wouldn't he realize that security is especially important? Stick around for crying out loud!

Why 2 1/3 Stars? Weird rating, I know, but I finished it even though I wanted to hurl it across the room several times. I would even be wiling to read it again if it undergoes editing.

McDonnell F-4 Phantom, Vol. 2: US Air Force and Export Versions (Planes and Pilots), by Gerard Paloque

With more than 5000 examples built, some of them under license, the McDonnel F-4 Phantom is considered as one of the most characteristic fighters of the sixties and seventies.

The thirteenth publication of the Planes & Pilots Series, this second volume dedicated to the Phantom presents the versions providing the USAF and the Air Forces of several foreign countries as Isral, Japan, Western Germany, Egypt...

Shortly after the US Navy put the F-4H-1 Phantom II into service in 1960, the US Air Force in turn took an interest in it. After a successful comparison with the best machines of the period, it was decided at the beginning of 1962 to use it as the standard tactical fighter. It was in May 1963 that the first USAF F-4C, overall similar to the Navy version, made its first flight and exceeded Mach 2. Several versions and variants of the twin-engine fighter were produced over almost ten years, taking advantage each time of the progress made in avionics, power plants and armament, with the original “all-missile” concept being eventually put aside in the light of the fighting in South-East Asia in which the aircraft took an active part, in exchange for an on-board weapon which turned out to be very effective both in the aerial combat and ground attack roles.

Apart from the USAF and the various units of the Air National Guard, or the United States Reserve which used the 2 600 F-4s up to the middle of the 90s - especially for recce or electronic warfare - the Phantom IIs were also very successful in the export markets since more than 1,200 examples were flown by ten or so countries, especially NATO ones. Some, like Japan, even built them under license in large numbers and many, like Israel and Iran, often used them successfully in combat.

"MCDONNELL F-4 PHANTOM, VOL. 2: EXCELLENT ARTWORK AND TECHNICAL GRAPHICS, AS WELL AS TECHNICALLY AND HISTORICALLY ACCURATE
By Gar Pillgrim
Technical graphics and overall art quality is topnotch. Historical and contemporary references to time, location and unit ID appears to be as accurate as any I've seen in similar pubs. A TOP QUALITY VOLUME -- ESPECIALLY AT AMAZON'S PRICE.

Now, if only you could obtain and sell copies of "VOL. 1: US NAVY AND USMC VERSIONS" (and/or if only the publisher would print and distribute of few thousand [even a few hundred!?] more of the same) I'll jump at the chance to purchase this book -- ESPECIALLY this book -- assuming your price wouldn't be too outlandishly high.

Review
`The best current translator of Latin poetry, Guy Lee, has now turned his attention to "The Poems of Catullus" ... this is yet another distinguished version from Lee's pen which deserves to become the standard version both for those with Latin and those studying Catullus in translation, and its author deserves hearty congratulations.' 'the work of a consummate Latinist ... with a desire to communicate something of the elegance and verbal flair of his original, a matter close to L.'s heart as the crisp introduction makes plain ... a very persuasive book' Roland Mayer, King's College, London, The Classical Review, Vol. XLIII, No. 2, 1993

Best translation of some great poetry
By Moira Lirtzman
The translations are generally flawless. If you are a Latin scholar, it is nice that they put the Latin and the English together on facing pages so you can go back and forth and see what the translator did to try to capture the tricks of meter and such in the translations. If you are just reading them for fun, the translations are not jerky or stilted like some others I could name.
If you engage the content of the poetry at all you'll find it is a pretty fantastic narrative of Roman life in the time. Individual lines and individual poems may stand out more to you if you're in various situations, but for the most part, they're among the most vibrant poems of their day. They're much more blue-collar than many of the poems you'll read from other Roman authors, so be ready for some vulgarity, but they stand out as truly great.
Overall, this is the translation I recommend to EVERYONE.

Full-blooded
By HH
Lee provides an introduction, text with facing translation, brief notes on each poem, an appendix on departures from the Oxford text and one on Catullan metres, and a short bibliography. The introduction begins with a succinct history of the text, followed by an explanation of the division into three libelli. Lee is convinced that the arrangement reflects Catullus' personal touch as editor, but he gives almost no sense of the extensive and controversial scholarly exploration of this point. On the other hand he discusses at length the identification of Lesbia/Clodia, including Skutsch's metrical evidence (as extended by Wiseman) -- only to dismiss the whole argument as "not of great importance to Catullus' readers". Lee promises to pay close attention to the details of translation, such as diminutives, but admits to being more free with metrical forms. His versions are somewhat colloquial, studded with compounds such as "mega-kiss" and "mini nose", and employing British slang such as "poofter" and "wank". On the whole, however, Lee has produced an accessible version of Catullus' poetry, without oversimplifying its tonal complexities. While the facing translation renders this version undesirable for Latin classes, it might be useful for a class on Roman life or literature. As Lee points out, Catullus' poetry offers an extraordinary and detailed view of Roman experience and emotion, a glimpse that this edition makes available to a wide audience.

[Read by Dave Mallow]

At long last, the epic biography Ted Williams deserves -- and that his fans have been waiting for. -- The Kid is biography of the highest literary order, a thrilling and honest account of a legend in all his glory and human complexity. In his final at-bat, Williams hit a home run. Bradlee's marvelous book clears the fences, too.

Williams was the best hitter in baseball history. His batting average of .406 in 1941 has not been topped since, and no player who has hit more than five hundred home runs has a higher career batting average. Those totals would have been even higher if Williams had not left baseball for nearly five years in the prime of his career to serve as a Marine pilot in World War II and Korea. He hit home runs farther than any player before him -- and traveled a long way himself, as Ben Bradlee Jr.'s grand biography reveals. Born in 1918 in San Diego, Ted would spend most of his life disguising his Mexican heritage. During his twenty-two years with the Boston Red Sox, Williams electrified crowds across America -- and shocked them, too. His notorious clashes with the press and fans threatened his reputation. Yet while he was a god in the batter's box, he was profoundly human once he stepped away from the plate. His ferocity came to define his troubled domestic life. While baseball might have been straightforward for Ted Williams, life was not.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of the Month, December 2013: In an age of performance enhancing drugs and a culture of wealth and deceit in professional sports, it's refreshing to revisit the feats of one of baseball’s best: the last man to hit .400 in a season, with a lifetime .344 batting average, who played remarkable baseball until age 40 and who reigns as the best all-around hitter in history. What sets this exhaustive exploration apart from other Ted Williams biographies is the author's finesse at maintaining a fan's enthusiasm for his remarkable subject while confronting the warts-and-all reality of an imperfect hero. Boston Globe reporter-editor Ben Bradlee Jr. admits at the start that Williams was, indeed, "my hero." Still, Bradlee never shies from dark side of the Williams myth: the insecure immigrant's son; the imperfect father and husband; the raging hothead, who flaunted his disdain for the press and a few teammates. Bradlee spent a decade investigating every detail of Williams’s 83 years--and beyond. He even uncovers gruesome tidbits about the strange aftermath of Williams’s death in 2002, when his body was taken to a cryonics facility, his head severed and then frozen inside a Tuperware-like container. Passionately researched and artfully told, this is much more than a sports story; it's the sprawling saga of a talented, tenacious, tumultuous, one-of-a-kind American man. --Neal Thompson

Review
"Sumptuous..The Kid reads like an epic....Bradlee has given us the fullest exploration yet of his monumental ego and the best explanation for his vast inferiority complex."―Allen Barra, Boston Globe

"What distinguishes Bradlee's The Kid from the rest of Williams lit is, its size and the depth of its reporting....Bradlee's expansiveness enables his book to transcend the familiar limits of the sports bio and to become instead a hard-to-put-down account of a fascinating American life."―Charles McGrath, New York Times Book Review

"Superb....Ted Williams hated what he considered invasions of his privacy, but perfectionist that he was, he would probably have to concede that the work ethic that underpins The Kid is exemplary....When I began reading this book, I thought that only baseball fans would find it interesting. But after finishing The Kid, I suspect that even those indifferent to the sport might find its human drama absorbing."―Howard Schneider, Wall Street Journal

"The prose is breezy, the research and reporting are impeccable....This book very much sets out to be the definitive document of a great, complicated, fascinating person and ultimately, it succeeds."―Dave Bry, Slate

"Bradlee's brilliant account is required reading for any Red Sox fan. It's also a fascinating portrait of a complex character that a baseball agnostic or even a Yankees fan will find hard to put down."―Jerry Harkavy, Associated Press

Ben Bradlee Jr. hits a grand slam across the Green Monster of Fenway Park in this definitive life of the Kid Ted Williams!
By C. M Mills
If you read one sports biography each year then this is the selection for you! What a massive book about (arguably) baseball's all time greatest hitter. The life of Ted Williams (1918-2002) comes to colorful life in this very long biography. (In my opinion the book could have been more judiciously edited). Ben Bradlee Jr. a longtime Boston based journalist has provided a detailed look at the man called by many nicknames:" Teddy Baseball, the Splendid Splinter and most famously The Kid.
Ted Williams was born in San Diego into a family of low middle class struggle. His mother was Mexican which Williams kept long hidden. Williams reached out to men like Pumpsie Green the first African-American to play for the Red Sox in 1959. The Red Sox under their owner Tom Yawkey were the last major league team to integrate their squad. Ted also called for the induction of players such as Satchel Paige and Monte Irwin and other stars from the Negro Leagues. This stand was most clearly stated when Teddy Baseball was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966.
Ted Williams played for the minor league San Diego Padres and the Minneapolis Milles before breaking into the majors with the Boston Rex Sox in 1939. Williams was a great hitter posting a .344 lifetime batting average. Williams was the last man to hilt 400 in
1941, Williams lost the MVP crown to his arch rival Joe DiMaggio who hit in 56 straight games as he led the Yankees to the pennant. Williams played in one World Series in 1946 when the Bosox fell to the St. Louis Cardinals. Ted was famous for his winning home run in the 1949 All Star Game. Teddy Ballgame won six hitting crowns and twice was named AL MVP.
Williams statistics would have been even more astounding if he had not bravely served as a Marine Corp Aviator in both World War II and Korea. In Korea he flew thirty-nine combat missions and became a friend of John Glenn the future astronaut and United States Senator from Ohio.
Ted Williams was a complex and volatile man with a hair trigger temper. Williams gave of his time and money visiting dying children, supporting the Jimmy Fund to aid cancer patients and helping his friends and family when they had financial problems. Ted was loyal and a generally friendly man whose temper could explode. He was profane and hated reporters. Williams may have been bipolar and today would have been treated for mental health issues.
Ted had a stormy private life. He was married three times and all unions ended in divorce. He had a difficult relationships with his three children Bobby Jo by first wife Doris'; John Henry and Claudia by his third wife Dolores. John Henry was a bit of a rogue. He had Ted preserved on ice and his head removed from his body to be preserved by ALCOR a cryonotics company. John Henry forced his aging and ill dad into the lucrative memorabilia market.
Ted Williams comes across as a baseball version of John Wayne or a character in an Ernest Hemingway short story. Williams was a perfectionist in all his major loves including:": hitting a baseball;' fishing with professional level skill'; hunting'; photography and serial womanizing. Ted professed to be an agnostic but late in life professed believe in Christ as Lord. Ted was a brilliant man who mastered the many challenges in his life.
Ben Bradlee is to be commended for his decade of research and his fluid prose which makes the Kid of baseball and his times come alive in countless anecdotes. Ted Williams, warts and all, was a great American icon and a patriot. God bless his troubled soul. A great book highly recommended. It kept me enthralled for the week I took to carve time out of my schedule to read it.

A detailed bio of the Splendid Splinter
By Steven Peterson
Ted Williams was a tortured person, as this lengthy biography makes clear. But, oh my, what a hitter he was! The last player to hit .400. With a major league career that began in 1939, in 1957--at an advanced age for a player--he hit .388. If he had any legs left, he may well have hit .400 if he would have been able to get some "leg hits."

The book accomplishes several worthy goals. First, it provides a big picture description and analysis of his baseball career--from the time when he first started playing until his retirement. It shows a growth as a player--from indifferent to playing defense to becoming a pretty decent outfielder. The book depicts his approach to hitting very nicely. It also shows the volatile side of him, when he would lose his temper, publicly get into painful disputes with reporters, sometimes not hustling when he would become angry with someone, and so on. And the ways he would "psyche" himself for a game. For instance, taking swings in the locker room, he would say: "I'm Teddy [expletive deleted] Ballgame of the Major [expletive deleted] Leagues. How can this pitcher get me out with his [expletive deleted] pitching" (I could not retrieve the exact quotation, but this is close]. The book has his batting statistics at the end (page 785), and that is helpful, to get a sense of the trajectory of his career.

Second, it gives a glimpse of Williams as a person. Not always pretty. He was married a number of times and the end result was often unpleasant. He had numerous affairs, had a wicked temper. In short, he tended to treat his wives badly. While his children would say that he was a good father, he was often away. And his personality. . . . He was obviously someone with some emotional/mental problems. He would sometimes get discouraged easily; he would lash out at people; and so on.

Third, it portrays his distressing state near the end of his life. Health problems came up. His son was manipulative and tried to develop a career and lots of income, and he was not above misusing his father. Perhaps most distressing, he wanted to "freeze" his father after death, rather than allowing Williams to be cremated as he had requested. The story is that Williams finally agreed, but the book certainly makes it appear that his son and a daughter manipulated him into the decision.

A richly told tale of a larger than life figure, with larger than life problems, who was a larger than life baseball player.

A Decade of Research Finally Brought to Fruition
By Bill Emblom
Whew! It has taken me two weeks to pioneer my way through this detailed biography of Ted Williams authored by Ben Bradlee, Jr. but the effort was worth it. We now have had two five star biographies on Williams, the other by Lee Montville entitled "Ted Williams". Both are worth your time. If you want to know practically everything you care to know and more about Teddy Ballgame than Bradlee's book "The Kid" would be the book to read. Some may feel they are being told more than what would interest them because Bradlee goes into great detail about the several wives of Williams in addition to his children and step-children. In addition there is a detailed hassle regarding Ted being "stored" in the Alcor facility in Scottsdale, Arizona, that may be belaboring to some readers.

Ted Williams was a man of many mood swings which may have dated back to his childhood where his mother was a dedicated worker with the Salvation Army and pretty much ignored him as did his father as well. Williams could be profanely abusive to people including his many wives and others who crossed his path. He, no doubt, could be very difficult to live with. On the other hand he could be very gentle with youngsters and would go out of his way to be of assistance to others who were in need. It was the great Rogers Hornsby who gave Williams the advice to "get a good ball to hit." Red Sox clubhouse man Johnny Orlando tagged Williams with the nickname "The Kid.".

Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey was often beloved by his players. He did, however, run a house of prostitution in South Carolina in which he, himself, took advantage of. We have often heard of "The curse of the Bambino" in which the Bosox failed for so many years to win a championship due to their shipping Babe Ruth off to the Yankees in 1920. However, the real curse lies in the lap of owner Tom Yawkey who wanted nothing to do with having an African-American player on the team. The Sox turned down both Jackie Robinson and Willie Mays in a tryout. Can you imagine those two in addition to Williams in the Hub's lineup at the same time during the 1950s? Yawkey and bigoted manager Mike "Pinky" Higgins have only themselves to blame for Boston's lackluster teams during that golden decade of the '50s.

Author Bradlee gives ample coverage of Ted Williams' military career. Ted was a flight instructor in World War II and had more interest in flying than in playing wartime baseball in the army. He was disappointed to say the least in being recalled to fight in the Korean War as a fighter pilot. However, his military career was exemplary and exhibited well-disciplined behavior.

Williams' greatest thrill in baseball was his walk-off home run in the 1941 All-Star game. He batted a disappointing .200 in the 1946 World Series but he had suffered an injury to his elbow by a pitched ball prior to the start of the Fall Classic.

A biography on Ted Williams would not be complete without a detailed coverage of his fishing exploits with his favorite locations being the Florida Keys, the Islamorada in the Upper Keys, and the Miramichi River in New Brunswick, Canada.

Ted toyed with the idea of quitting in the mid-1950s until a fan named Ed Mifflin convinced him to continue playing so he could achieve milestones that were within his reach. The book covers anecdotes of several Red Sox players such as Don Buddin, Sammy White, Ted Lepcio, and Milt Bolling all of whom I remember from my baseball cards of the 1950s and my following of the Detroit Tigers.

This book is a massive effort by author Ben Bradlee, Jr. which took him a decade to bring to fruition. It also includes three separate sections of photographs. If you want to know most everything about Ted Williams' life then this would be the book to read. If you want another five star biography on Ted Williams which will provide you with less detail then I would suggest you read Lee Montville's book entitled Ted Williams. Both are outstanding.

Osteopathic Considerations in Systemic Dysfunction.
By Richard Dana
This book is a compendium of amazingly ideas and concept which set the osteopathic profession apart from traditional medicine. I do not believe that osteopathy is " better" than the traditional mode- I have met excellent physician with both backgrounds. But the osteopathic model- at its best, can be a powerful tool, when used with the insight of great leaders in the field- i is: Ed Stiles, D.O., Fred Mitchell D.O. ( both senior, and junior), Loren Rex, D.O., etc., etc., etc. this book is a tribute to the profession, at its best. A fine reference.

By A Customer
An excellent and very welcome text on the important role Osteopathy has to play in the treatment of visceral disease. By explaining the relationships between viscera and the Autonomic nervous system, the authors have been able to recommend an approach and treatment plan for many common visceral disorders. For any Osteopath who has a desire to explore the full power of Osteopathy and be confident in treating such conditions in their clinic, this book is a must.
