I had the opportunity to review Information Development Using Mike2.0 (Motion Publishing, 2013) by Andreas Rindler, Robert Hillard, Sean McClowry and Sven Mueller.

MIKE2.0, which stands for Method for an Integrated Knowledge Environment, is an open source methodology for Enterprise Information Management that provides a framework for information development including Business Intelligence, Enterprise Data Management, Enterprise Content Management, Information Asset Management, Enterprise Search, Information Management Strategy, Information Governance and Information Architecture.

The MIKE2.0 Methodology was initially created by a team from BearingPoint. All content on MIKE2.0 is made freely available as open source under the Creative Commons Attribution License. All the content is available at [...]

The book consists of key content from Mike2.0 and is arranged in a consumable manner. It includes an overall implementation guide, Mike2.0 solutions, the SAFE (STRATEGIC ARCHITECTURE for the Federated Enterprise) architecture, deliverable templates, popular blog posts and references. Given my own specialty, I appreciated the focus on Information Governance and Big Data.

The book is a definite must read for Information Management professionals who are looking to establish a data management competency within their organizations. And a special word of thanks to Rob, Sven, Sean, and Andi for taking the time to put this book together for the information management practitioner community.

A great book on Mike2.0 and information development

This book's value should be evaluated in conjunction with MIKE2.0 methodology (Method for an Integrated Knowledge Development). Even though there is a variety of information management methodologies established on the market, MIKE2.0 is special in a number of aspects. The methodology is available in the public domain and easily accessible over the Internet. Not only information management professionals can readily review and evaluate the methodology, they can also contribute to the content of MIKE2.0. This makes the methodology collaborative, continuously evolving and ultimately more dynamic and comprehensive than proprietary methodologies developed and maintained by companies and organizations

In the past, one of the challenges for a new user of MIKE2.0 was the abundance of information that MIKE2.0 offers. A demand for a concise book summarizing the key concepts of the methodology, its framework and organization was fairly obvious . The information management community has finally obtained this book!

The book is organized in 8 chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the methodology. Chapter 2 describes the implementation phases. In chapter 3 the solution offerings covered by MIKE2.0 are reviewed at a high level. Chapter 4 focuses on some select solutions that include a number of traditional disciplines like information management and relatively new information development areas such as Big Data. Chapter 5 introduces SAFE architecture (Strategic Architecture for the Federated Enterprise). Some supporting and very useful assets and blogs are presented in chapters 6 and 7. Chapter 8 provides some select case studies that illustrate the methodology in action.

A savvy information management professional can quickly familiarize himself or herself with the methodology framework, activities, deliverables, phases and solutions. Despite its breadth, the book is relatively concise and it is written very well. Some chapters, especially discussions on information development history, will be of interest for a broader audiences including college students.

In my top 5 books of all time

This book is the most practical book for deepening spiritual awareness I've come upon. In short chapters, very powerful teachings are shared. In each chapter nsightful questions are asked for the reader to introspect and journal. Affirmations and suggestions for practicing each lesson is given. I teach at a seminary and use this book in all of my classes and workshops. I have used this book for small home study groups. Without exception, my students, counselees, and others to whom I've recommended this book have found it very powerful. Regardless of one's faith background, this book is a consciousness awakener. I have used the "collapse process" and have attended some of Dr. Demartini's workshops. I am profoundly influenced by this powerful work. If we all lived by the awarenesses and practices delineated in this book, we would be so filled with gratitude moment to moment that we would establish peace on earth.

At a time of my life when I was feeling lost and alone, I received a copy of this book as a gift. I picked it up to glance through it, and found I could not put it down. Out from its pages jumped some of the greatest insights I have ever read in a book, about life, love and healing. This is a book that is more than worth the money you spend on it, because it will teach you about loving life, yourself and others.

A shift in perspective can be the difference between heaven or hell

This is a diamond find. At the very least this book should inspire you to write a daily gratitute list ... and begin a record of how blessed your life is. There is always room for improvement, we are not perfect, but it is in being grateful that we are in a mental state to see what else is possible. I believe Nelson Mandela once said that hate has caused alot of problems and solved none of them. If hate only begats hate, only love can heal hate. Both emotions are two sides of the same coin. Start with this daily counting of blessings, and see what more you can be grateful for.

Marvelous (sort of) memoir

This is such a wonderful book. Not really a memoir, it’s more reflections on past and present by an important feminist theorist/critic now in her 70s, living in New York. The living in New York part is crucial because Gornick is choosing to focus on her life as a (now) single, childless woman who finds inspiration and contentment in her daily ramblings around the city.

The author grounds her experience in a theoretical framework—the flaneur as anonymous eye happily wandering modern urban spaces—but you’d get her point anyway. Gornick finds much meaning in the random everyday encounters provided by the rich streetlife of a great city. We travel with her down those streets and, given that’s she’s a great story teller, it’s a lot of fun.

The Odd Woman and the City integrates Gornick’s observations of city life with fascinating reflections on what it means to be a feminist woman of a certain age, a solitary apartment dweller, a friend of other solitary New Yorkers, etc. Bits of philosophy, literary criticism and autobiography alternate to good effect. Particularly if you share age, experience and a love of urban environments with the author, you are sure to enjoy her book.

She feels that New York City is the perfect place for quick encounters

A theme that runs through this book is that one does not truly live life while vested in a committed relationship, rather the meaningful growth happens during the transitory period between the meetings; the problem is, such a philosophy often leads to loneliness, as it apparently has in her case. She feels that New York City is the perfect place for quick encounters, quasi friendships, and short-lived lover affairs, because the city is bustling with every-changing characters, many with their own story to tell, and for the most part, noncommittal. Her description of the city reminds me of the character played by Dustin Hoffman in “Midnight Cowboy” where the small time con man is just trying to survive in New York. Gornick appears to feed off of the quirks exhibited by these street people she often runs into on the avenues. In a sense, they justify her existence. Not wanting to be “her mother’s daughter”, is the plan for her, but her yearning to live off of the “expressiveness” of these people who have not fled to the suburbs, is likely to keep her on track with this unwanted ending. Her attempt to rationalize her mostly solo existence, by referencing Freud’s theory, that one’s solitary goals are anguishing, but almost impossible to give up because they are needed for the inner souls, is not particularly compelling- for her, or in general. To me, she just seems somewhat selfish. She is good at times describing people. While at an apparently pretentious social dinner, she notices a blonde at the table “who picked fretfully at her food and wore a thin layer of anxiety over her make-up”. Throughout the book, she mentions her sidekick, “Leonard”, a gay man, she frequently takes long talking-walks with, where they discuss their present and past lives. He seems, emotionally speaking, similarly situated to Gornick; they both appear quite intelligent. One classic line attributed to him is, when he said in response to people blaming the crucifixion of Jesus on the Jews, “It was the Romans who killed him, why don’t they blame the Italians?” I can recommend this book.

The Sea Wall is a fine example of Duras' cinematic and romantic writing style. Like The Lover, this novel is semi-autobiographical, and is set in French colonial Indochine.It is the story of a poor widow's desperate fight against the world she is trapped in, exemplified by the sea wall she constructs to stop the yearly encroachment of the sea on her useless concession of land. Although her efforts are futile, she bravely, or sometimes absurdly, maintains hope in the midst of poverty and her children's growing restlessness.

The Sea Wall is the first of three autobiographical novels Marguerite Duras would write about her teenage years in Indochina. She lived both in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam) and on a small coastal rice plantation in what is now Cambodia. The latter is the setting for this novel.

The author's alter ego is named Suzanne. She lives with her mother, referred to only as "Ma," and her older brother Joseph. Ma and her husband had immigrated to Indochina in 1899, lured by the government's promise of easy wealth. The husband had died soon after Suzanne's birth. Later Ma had applied for a land concession, and been granted 100 acres of supposedly prime rice land. Too late, she had discovered that all but five acres of it was inundated by the sea every monsoon season. Ma had gone deeply into debt building a sea wall to keep out the salt water, only to see it collapse the very first year.

The story takes place in the early 1920s when Suzanne is 17, her brother 20. The trio are subsisting on wild game, fish, and the little rice they can manage to grow while Ma staves off her creditors and nurtures the hope of somehow rebuilding the sea wall. She pins her hopes on Suzanne, whose beauty is bound to attract a rich husband some day. Their dreams seem about to be realized when Monsieur Jo, the spoiled son of a wealthy colonist, falls in love with Suzanne. But he has no intention of marrying her, and Suzanne makes no secret of the fact that all they are after is his money.

The Sea Wall is a bleak novel. Its unlovable characters are condemned to poverty, not for lack of energy or ambition, but for a lack of vision. Ma doggedly fixates on the sea wall as her only hope and on marketing her daughter's virginity as the key to realizing it. Her two children think only of escape, but are incapable of breaking with the daily routine to find a way out.

The first half of the novel is sharply focused on the family and the affair with Monsieur Jo. In the second half, however, Duras broadens the vision to include the native population of the cities and countryside. There are gut wrenching scenes of poverty, disease, and injustice with the youngest being the ones who suffer the most. In addition to a tense family drama, the novel becomes a bitter indictment of colonialism.

Duras re-told the story of her youth in her most famous novel, The Lover, but with substantial changes in both plot and style. The Sea Wall more closely resembles the writing of Louis-Ferdinand C�line with its hard-boiled, grim and nihilistic tone.

The Sea Wall Revisited

Duras' 3rd novel 'The Sea Wall' revisits her own past and appears to be again autobiograpical. For those familiar with her best known work 'The Lover' it runs to a similar postcolonial format. She is believed to have written 'The Sea Wall' first and waited for her family to be gone before she could attempt to tell the truth about her youth, which, she claimed to have done in 'The Lover'. While I found 'The Sea Wall' interesting the novel did not move as smoothly as her other work and was less satisfiying in it's outcome. But as a French postcolonial text with a feminist leaning, it is very interesting especially from a comparative perspective.
