About the Author

Craig E. Johnson (PhD, University of Denver) is emeritus professor of leadership studies at George Fox University, Newberg, Oregon, where he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in leadership, ethics, management and communication. During his time at the university he served as director of the George Fox Doctor of Business Administration program and chair of the Department of Communication Arts. Though retired from full-time teaching, Johnson continues to serve as an adjunct professor. He is the author of Organizational Ethics: A Practical Approach (also published by Sage) and co-author, with Michael Z. Hackman, of Leadership: A Communication Perspective. His research findings, instructional ideas, and book reviews have been published in the Journal of Leadership Studies, the Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies, the Journal of Leadership Education, Academy of Management Learning and Education, the International Leadership Journal, Communication Quarterly, Communication Reports, and other journals. In 2016 he received the George Fox University outstanding graduate faculty researcher award.� Johnson has led and participated in service and educational trips to Honduras, Kenya, Rwanda, New Zealand, China, and Brazil and has held volunteer leadership positions in a variety of religious and nonprofit organizations. This book arrived at moment in my life when I had agreed to deliver a seminar on intercultural leadership and create a symposium on academic excellence with a focus on ethics. It had been many years since I had philosophy courses in ethics and felt like I needed a significant refresher despite the fact that I felt I was au courant with the ethical challenges and issues that existed in the context or I was working. The trick was to turn endless ethical speculation into a process whereby individuals recognized the elements that were rooted in their cultural conscience and their critical personal experiences.

Certainly we live in a shadowy world, and it is that world where the authors launch the questions that are aimed at helping us cope with it and change it. On the other hand, we are too easily ready to condemn others behavior if the temptation to turn a blind eye fails us. "Moral Disengagement" can seem like the only alternative drowning in to insoluble perplexities of contemporary existence. Moral disengagement, in fact, is the theme of one of the many self-administered soundings of personal attitudes and behaviors that the book uses to bring students to engage not just ideas but to explore themselves and share with each other.

Sources of moral theory and practice from various cultures are examined with their pros and cons, or rather with an eye to what they can do and what they can't do. There is perhaps less of an emphasis on the religious roots of much moral formation that exists perhaps for more of us than we might suspect. Consistently there is awareness of and advice for “followership” as well as leadership. In life we will inevitably play both roles betimes, and it is refreshing as well as important to concentrate on behaviors that make ethical followers as well as keep leaders on track.
Teachers today are faced with classes that may be composed more of international than domestic students. This inevitably means that there are various views on what is right and wrong in everyday student life as well as going on in the world outside. We assume the telling others about differences suffices to create the awareness and the acculturation required for successfully coping with the new environment. While we may intellectually hear and recognize that there are new standards, this often does little for the innate perspectives and inclinations we bring with us. Simply put, we don't believe the new rules or recognize how seriously they may be meant—and their consequences. The usefulness of what it's found in this book lies not just in its perusal, but in its explorations that can be discussed and shared as students search for strategies going forward.
It is hard today to write a book about ethics without revealing one’s moral and ethical position and cultural orientation. The author has done a rather good job of this, but advocacy is ever present in the examples, histories and case studies chosen just in the act of choosing them. Certainly today’s world is full of ethical challenges and there is a very broad selection of them, current and up to date. In my case, my classroom frequently consists of more international students than domestic ones, so there is the challenge of opening the door to a much wider selection of issues, cultural orientations and perspectives than the largely US and Eurocentric ones that are familiar or at least recognizable to more domestic participants.

The examination of popular culture, Hollywood and Bollywood, etc., as cultural mediators provides discussable examples of leadership and ethical dilemmas. There could be more about marketing, branding, both of commercial products and group identities. We live on a planet whose “worlds” are shaped by our social constructions and this deserves more examination and enlightenment. Though we repeatedly attempt them, “universal” principles are hard to come by in a diverse world. This is becoming ever more evident and perhaps our need to construct them while paying lip service to difference can be colonization redux.

While world affairs may seem a touch speculative to undergraduate and even many graduate students, everyday behavior around social inclusion, plagiarism, cheating, and classroom behavior elicit strong feelings that in turn result in knee-jerk ethical judgments, often very uninformed.This is a powerful launching point for ethical concern and discussion.

This book is massively less expensive than the course!

It's also well written and gives your all of the basics you need to know to get vRO/vRA running in a test environment so you can learn.

About the Author
I was born in Stamford, Texas in 1944 and shortly after moved to Meridian, Ms where I grew up. I attended Highland Elementary, Kate Griffin Jr. High, and Meridian High School and went on to four years at Livingston State Teachers College in Livingston, Ala {now called UWA}. After leaving college I entered the field of retail management with F.W. Woolworth, then Woolco, then TG& Y, then Walmart and finally Marvin's Home Center Stores. That career spanned over 30 years of my life. Early in my career {1966} I married my wife Pamela Smith Haynes from Shucktown, Ms. {that's right, she was a country girl}. We have four children - Virginia, Tammy, Susan and Asa. Unfortunately for me and particularly for my wife and family I began a downward spiral over those 30 years that led me into behaviours centered totally around the lust of my eyes, the needs of my flesh and the pride of life that turned me into a dark and depraved man, husband and father. In 1996 when my family could take it no longer, my wife asked me for a divorce and my children basically disowned me and then ordered me to get out and don’t come back. Only then did I become willing to accept how deep into depravity I had sunk. Just when I thought all was lost I met a man named Christ Jesus. He has not only saved me, saved my marriage and my family but He has literally transformed me into a totally new creation. What I once thought was the end of everything, I now know was the BEGINNING of everything. Because I am so grateful for His mercy and loving kindness I have purposed along with my wife and family to spend the rest of my days on this earth sharing the Good News with hopeless and hurting individuals and families that no matter how bad it seems - Christ can redeem it, heal it and restore it. Hence, my wife Pam and I founded Righteous Oaks Recovery Center for Men in Chunky, Ms in 2001 and Jacobs Well Recovery Center for Women in Poplarville, Ms in 2005. My Heart’s Desire is to live my life today with the assurance of my Salvation, the living proof of my transformation and a burning desire to rise from my bed every morning with only one prayer in my heart. "Lord, until you bring me home to be with you for eternity do not let one day go by that you do not place a broken hurting person in my path that I can give the same hope you have given me in Christ Jesus, Amen.

Comprehensive textbook for non-technical audience

The text provides a broad (many lecturers will skip the coverage of Shannon's information theory) but not deep coverage of telecommunications, then mobile networks of various kind, and wireless data services.
Strengths: The coverage is reasonably complete, the language is clear, and there are many useful illustrations, plus a promise of an online website for instructors and student.
Weaknesses: I would have liked deeper coverage of peer-to-peer mobile communications (MMS with phonecams, etc), and the use of RFID in logistics, retailing, etc.
It is suitable for an MBA course, and as an advanced text to support an undergraduate IS course, but not for engineers.

Useful for intermediate students

This book is well written and clearly presented. There is a long section that reviews how different words are used in Arabic and provides a lot of information I haven't seen in other "textbooks". The section points out differences between English and Arabic usage which is helpful. The last section of the book focuses on grammar, which provides a useful review. I would recommend this book to someone who already is at a high- intermediate level of proficiency.

Mumtaz! Excellent, probably worth buying for any serious student of Arabic

A mere 15 minutes of reading this book, which I bought on a whim not really thinking that I needed it, transformed my understanding of Arabic and also of what was really going on in several organizations in which I have worked over the past three years. I have been learning MSA for some time and am happy enough with my progress. But what Mahdi Alosh's book gave me was, for the first time, an understanding of how to relate the MSA that I am learning and which works perfectly well for me when I speak it to the way that the native speakers of Arabic with whom I work sometimes speak. A simple example is the afferent pronunciations of words such as that for gold, and whether the initial consonant is sounded more as a "z" or not; another is why I hear "shoot" used sometimes as the word for the verb "to see" whereas "ra'y" is the word in my textbook. One of the principal causes of such variations is explained by Alosh in terms of three registers, R1, R2 and R3, which refer to the formality of the context, except that the term "formality" does not convey the full reason.

This book has in less than an hour fundamentally transformed my understanding of the Arabic language. What I understand from this book is that for a native Arabic speaker, the Arabic language has a significantly broader meaning and is a factor in a much wider area of life than the English or French languages are for native speakers of those languages.

Thanks to this transformational development in my understanding of what Arabic is, I now am much better able to focus my effort in learning Arabic, because I have a much better idea of what to pay attention to when listening, and which are the words unfamiliar to me that I hear others use that I ought to learn to use myself and which I need not learn to use.

My complaint about this book is that it is not available on Kindle. It is inexcusable for a publisher these days not to make it available, and it is a shame that the author, having gone to the effort of creating such a detailed and useful book, seems to have felt he could not be bothered to give the publisher a kick up the backside to get them out of the 19th century.

I am not aware of any other book like Alosh's _Using Arabic_ and I feel that it is likely to be valuable to any serious student of Arabic. It is not designed to be a textbook for learning Arabic; but if you already have a textbook and have made good progress in it, say up to chapter 3 or 4, and you are interested in communicating in spoken or written Arabic, then I strongly recommend this book.
