The Long Hard Way

I don't recommend this for most general surgery residents. If you're a prelim, plastics, or urology resident forced to take the ABSITE, don't get this book. I give it 4 stars, though, because it's as thorough as any 'review' can be. This should be titled the Comprehensive ABSITE *and* Oral Board Review. No one shall expand on this an call it a 'review'- at that point it becomes a textbook.

Positives:
1. If the ABSITE asks a question not in this book, hate the game, not the player. It truly is COMPREHENSIVE. The ABSITE is a city with a zoo, and this book shows you where the zebras are.
2. Fiser does underline, italicize, and asterix VERY important info. Every 3rd word is bolded, like the regular ABSITE Review, making it more of a way to breakup monotony than emphasize important stuff.
***3***. The diagnostic and treatment algorithims are complete yet simple. I feel like I could read about a certain scenario (e.g. breast mass in pregnancy) and have a *very* strong oral board answer. And not just one answer, but counter answers. This is the secret advantage of this book. For each surgical disease, it runs over workup, surgical indications, surgical options, complications, and deviations from typical scenarios extremely well

Negatives:
1. No figures, diagrams, or pictures. It's like looking at a Word document a friend made. If you crave visuals, get the regular ABSITE review.
2. It's big. It's several hundred pages in very small font. It doesn't fit well in a white coat pocket. You can't study this thing the night or even a month prior to the test. This is a year-round supplement. It could be integrated in a curriculum or to brush up for a rotation. If you need to cram, you're better off memorizing the ABSITE Killer which for some reason still is relevant.
3. Cost. This is a ridiculous price for such a sparing presentation. Almost boycott worthy. It's a cynical price to game those nuts who feel like they need to know everything (I'm guilty).

In brief, if the regular ABSITE Review is a distillation of the pertinent highlights and figures from Greenfield's, this is stripping away all the gloss, and infusing it with Cameron's and the rare nugget from Mastery of Surgery. If you like to buy Apple products or furniture from IKEA, stay away from this book, and get The ABSITE Review instead- that one is attractive, easier to use, and really does cover the essential points for the ABSITE. The Comprehensive ABSITE Review is big, ugly, and powerful.

Very dense - Doesn't have everything

I am a second year General Surgery resident and have read The Absite Review many times by Fiser. I decided to get this book for more information. The reviews were right in that it's very dense. Small font, top-to-bottom and no pictures. It has a lot of information that isn't in The Absite Review, but it's also missing information that the other book has. I think it's meant to be an add-on to the original book and not a replacement. I recommend this book, but in addition to The Absite Review. That way you get all the information and some pictures.

Read this book 3 times before ABSITE and your only limitation becomes your test taking ability. Of course, Fiser is due for a new edition, but who knows if or when that will ever happen. The breast stuff is now out of date, as are I'm sure several other topics. But overall a great resource. I even kept it in my pocket when I started out on consults so that I would have a quick reference for those not-so-common clinical scenarios that always pop up at 2 am.

If you want your child to get much out of this book they have to have a basic understanding of ancient history. The book references the Persians, Babylonians, and Ostrogoths to name a few. There is also reference to the Synod of Jamnia not including the Apocrypha as if the reader knows and understands what a synod might be.
As another reviewer mentioned, it is a very busy book. Not suited at all for group or class use. Much like an Usborne book with bubbles and text boxes all over.

Be aware -
The book discusses how writing began with 30,000 years ago our prehistoric ancestors painted on walls.
Also, if you care about Biblical translations at all, there is no mention of the difference between the Codex Vaticanus and the Codex Sinaiticus. The only mention is that the RSV made revisions to the KJV based on new work on the original Greek and Hebrew and from there we have many translations in modern English.

One interesting text box shows the first verse of Ps. 23 in five different older versions to show how language has changed over 200 years.

All in all, if your child already has a basic understanding of the flow of history and church history then this book isn't going to add much. If they are coming from a public school education, it might be helpful to fill in details they would have missed.

This little book answers many of the questions both confirmands and adults ask as they come to a time of church membership. It is easily usuable in all denominations. The language is easily understood and yet down not talk down to the reader. I recommend this book highly.

Simple to read, effects for life!

For those who always wondered methods on how to say hard and have multiple male orgasms, this book explains how and what you should do to get them. Simple text, interesting drawings. I actually pick up the book all the time and read a bit just to refresh my mind. I am really into the spiritual aspect with the tantra focus and this gave both. How to do it and how to do it even further with a more spiritual methods. Awesome!

John Gallant lives today in Prince Edward Island, where the stories in this book take place. Seth was born in 1962 in a rural Ontario town. Is Seth's information useful/relevant??

Seems like friends of this couple used their friendship feelings in place of a true review and greatly embellished the actual content of this work. I am very disappointed, having purchased the book believing that it could be used as a guide (hello?) TOWARD BETTER HEALTH!! With all of the background that this woman had with this entity, how was it that in the clutch, she didn't seem to be able to capitalize on the advice he offered?? Sad final commentary on the actual usefulness of the entity's information. Does this extend to the other topics covered in the other books as well???

Jane's last year in hospital with comments from Seth

This book describes Jane's last year in hospital. It's termed a Seth-Book, which is technically correct, but it's as well a book from Robert (Jane's husband). Seth readers are familiar with the Italics, and the main body of this book is actually Italics. The Seth material in it is very good indeed, but most of it can be found scattered across his other work as well. However, in no other book did Robert/Jane allow the reader to come as close to their lives as in this one. I normally just skim the Italics, but here they just sucked me in. Seth occasionally uses the word "drama" in his other books -- this book simply is DRAMA PUT ALIVE. The actual book dictation is about 1/3 or 1/4 of the book, then there's about 1/4 Seth comments to Robert/Jane's current situation and the rest is Italics. The mixture makes this book very powerful and very moving. This book actually makes me think about going to Yale University to study more of the private sessions.
Not recommended if you don't at least know two or three other Jane Roberts/Seth books.
Also, I'm not sure if I would recommend it if you are currently dealing with (own) health problems.
However, an EXCELLENT source of material if you are dealing with healing other people (being a nurse, a doctor or just a healer by intent).

Light and introductory with the scent of apple pie

I wasn't impressed with this book for two separate reasons. Firstly, the production standard struck me as almost 1960s' in style - black and white photos (nice 'grainy' look), big bulky monitors and a general aged format. It is peculiar I agree, but the book looks like it was written at least 30 if not 40 years ago. The second set of quibbles I have with the text is that it presume the reader is almost completely ignorant of any kind of presentation technology. This assumption may have been acceptable several decades ago but the universality of TV seriously undermines its value. Television is constantly exposting the public to new technologies. For instance, in the text there is a piece with graphic devoted to how to load a slide projector. How relevant is that to today's classroom? Moreover, any decent bit of kit comes with instructions. I accept that the authors wish to do a thorough hand holding with the reader, but the book assume too little exposure to technology which renders it advice mediocre in places. Possibly it should be retitled Instructional Media Technology for Complete Dummies. The bits on the web are small (literally bits) which is not a good sign. Overall, the book was lightweight - possibly I am being unfair as I am not looking for the technology it covers, but for review of current and future developments. In any event I regret buying the book as it doesn't fit my needs and I didn't like its presentation style. It is a tired book, more like jaded, that does not mesh well with the style culture of modern multimedia technology.

Nice update of a classic textbook

As a co-author, I can report that Instructional Media upholds the tradition established by this textbook in 1982. It is aimed primarily at those who are at the entry level in terms of using media for education or training. It helps instructors decide what media to use for different teaching/learning situations, and gives practical tips on HOW to achieve the best effect when using technology. The book began with a focus on audiovisual media; the sixth edition retains the most relevant audiovisual content, but shifts focus toward computer-based delivery. What remains constant is the conviction that effectiveness of mediated instruction depends very much on what the instructor does...how the technology is integrated into the overall learning program.

Pay no attention to one gentleman's "Apple Pie" comment about the step-by-step instructions included in this book. After all, not everyone is as technologically adept as he may be. If you have already mastered such technology, then this material is possibly too basic for you.
