A date rape survivor and overcomer in Christ, Me Ra today travels around the country, teaching writing workshops and speaking to young people and women about date rape. In 1998, New Life Clinics featured her story in their tenth- anniversary celebration. Me Ra and her husband live in Washington state.

An amazing soul

I didn't know Me Ra was an author until I met her. She would mention date rape as someone talking about when they first became engaged to their husband: with reverence to a difficult time in her life, but with emotional ease that only someone whom had dealt with great trauma and had overcome could do. To know her in person is to become exceedingly aware that she has no inner demons. That she has gone through great pain, vulnerability, degradation and hardship is true, but she bears no scars. People that have experienced trauma usually have "issues" remaining. To meet her is to become acutely aware that she doesn't have any "issues" because she has dealt with the grief associated with the rape, in all its forms. She is my role model for overcoming, and becoming whole.
When I see her, I can only think to myself of mirroring her restorative process. If she could endure and become well again, then I want to follow the same path she took in my personal emotional healing.
This book is her story. I use it as an example for my life. The One Way is God, and she will show you why. When all others make you question humanity, you're left with nothing to believe in; for humanity can bring much destruction on the individual. God's way is a path of hope and belief, of restoration. Read and discover this for yourself.

This book is about life not just date rape

It is inevitable that everyone encounters obstacles and experiences tragedy in life, after reading this book you realize that the tragedy or obstacle is not what is important but what you do about it. Broken dreams must be restored, we must find hope and strength to fight through hard times and triumph. As you read through this book you experience the writers pain, tragedy, suffering, and most of all triumph and victory. Most people go through life not realizing how powerful certain events can be in shaping their lives by ignoring them and choosing not to face them and resolve them, this book shows a woman who not only faced and resolved a tragic event in her life but how she used it to reach people and give them hope when dealing with tragedy. I suggest that whether you are a woman dealing with date rape or someone that hasn't let go or faced their tragedy and hurt.

A Courageous Story of Hope and Redemption

It is a big step for a Christian publisher to be talking about a subject which has too often been ignored --date rape. This book, which tells of Me Ra's personal story of abuse and restoration, will be healing, informing and encouraging to anyone who has been on either side of sexual abuse. It is also a must-read for anyone planning on being involved in any kind of pastoral ministry (which, in a sense, is every person) --for we see and talk to people everyday who have gone through painful sexual experiences, yet we can hardly imagine how many actually have. While Me Ra's story is intimately tied to her Christian faith, it is accessible to all mature readers. Way to go Me Ra for sharing with us your heart and your story of hope! May this type of courage and vulnerability continue to be shown by Christians.

Just the Facts

Having only a general knowledge of the ripper murders of the late 19th century, I was looking for a book that could fill in some of the details and distinguish between the known and the speculative. In this regards, the author succeeds. Mr. Rumbelow begins by giving us an overview of the East End in general and Whitechapel in particular since these are the areas in which the murders occurred. We learn about the population size, the number of poor, and other relevant socioeconomic facts. After this concise introduction to 1888 London and its environs, we move right into the murders themselves.

The author does a good job of distilling the facts associated with each of the five confirmed murders. We learn of the sad living conditions of the victims, their lowly states, and the brutality of their murders. We, of course, also learn a bit about Jack the Ripper along the way. The most definitive thing we learn is how he kills. To wit, he strangles his victims, puts them in a prone position, and then mutilates them with what is presumably a surgical knife of some kind. Somewhat surprisingly, it would seem that everything else that is related to the ripper lacks this kind of clarity. For example, although a general consensus exists that the killer had some anatomical knowledge and surgical skill, there is not complete unanimity by all that were involved in the case. Also, while newspapers and the police were flooded with letters claiming either to be the ripper or to know who he was, we know that only a couple of the letters are suspected to have actually come from the ripper himself. Do these letters, which were written in a coarse style, tell us the ripper was poorly educated or merely pretending to be so? If the former, then how does that square with the belief that the killer had anatomical and surgical skills? Could he have been a butcher of some kind? We just don't know and this book, unfortunately, can't tell us.

In addition to the murder details, we also learn of the intensive police investigation. The police were hamstrung at the time by the lack of scientific and forensic tools that we now possess. Remember that not only did DNA testing not exist; even blood typing had yet to make an appearance. Nonetheless, the police did what they could. Perhaps as a City of London policeman, Mr. Rumbelow is a bit biased, but he paints a picture of the police doing a competent job (informing the public, increasing patrols, setting traps, withholding key pieces of information, etc.) given the constraints they faced (e.g., territorial disputes between the city of London police and the Metropolitan police). However, this is not to say that no mistakes were made. One notable example is the Metropolitan police commissioner personally erasing a message that the ripper is believed to have scrawled on a wall for fear that anti-Jewish sentiment could spark a riot. While the message was written down, there is some question as to whether it was accurately transcribed. Had Sir Charles Warren been willing to wait just one hour more, a photograph could have been taken for later study.

It's really the second half of the book that falters and has given rise to my three star rating. Many pages are spent discussing seven suspects or so. While some discussion is warranted, the 100 pages seem excessive. This is especially so when you consider that we ultimately do not know the identity of the culprit and Mr. Rumbelow seems skeptical of the suspects that he presents. Additionally, the author spends a good deal of time discussing "ripper" murders that have occurred in the 20th century. The problem is that notwithstanding the fact that these killers may have been dubbed "rippers" by the press or public, they bear little resemblance to the 18th century East End killings. They may all have been serial killers, but the latter-day murderers did not confine themselves to one section of town, prey exclusively on prostitutes, or mutilate their victims in the way that the original ripper did. Taking all of this into consideration, the coverage of Jack the Stripper, the Dusseldorf Ripper, and the Yorkshire Ripper appears superfluous.

Despite the criticism, this is still a very good introduction to Jack the Ripper for those who have little or no knowledge of the specifics of the killings. This book was originally published in 1975 and the edition I read was from 1988. There are probably some Ripperologists who feel that a book of this vintage is outdated, but I'm not convinced we know much more now then we did twenty years ago. It's true that there have been those who claim to have discovered the identity of the real Jack the Ripper (notably Patricia Cornwell), but the suspects and a large portion of the evidence against them are included in this book and we still don't have any forensics to positively identify any person as the killer. Therefore, I recommend this book to those interested in the case, but I also caution that this is probably not a good read for the squeamish. Many of the killings are necessarily described in graphic fashion and there are even some morgue and crime scene photos.

Highly recommended as an introduction to the subject

This was not the very first book I ever read about Jack the Ripper but it is the first I purchased in the 30 odd books I currently own. I thoroughly enjoyed it the first time I read it and have re-read it several times ever since. Mr Rumbelow, an ex-London Police officer, has a very pleasant and entertaining writing style and he covers his chosen material very well.

There are certainly a lot of books in my collection that deal with the murders far more comprehensively and in more detail than in this fairly short work but that is part of the charm of the book and the reason that it is so eminently suited to persons approaching the subject for the first time. Rumbelow reviews the basic facts concerning the murders popularly attributed to Jack the Ripper, briefly identifies some of the main suspects, and introduces some of the other main players in the drama. There is not a wealth of detail concerning this witness or that, or an exhaustive review of forensic evidence, but Rumbelow efficiently covers the basics and allows the beginner to become familiar with the essentials.

Naturally, since the original edition is over thirty years old, it cannot cover some of the more recent developments on Ripper theory - the putative Maybrick diary or the Cornwell investigation, for example - but this in no way diminishes the value of the work. Rumbelow gives us a simple, down to earth review of the facts as they developed at the time and he explains the reasons why people believed what they did (and how they reacted) as those various facts came to light.

In addition to providing a fine overview of the essential elements of the case, Rumbelow also begins with a well-written and very sobering introduction to the East end of London in the late nineteenth century. He briefly examines serial killers both before and after the Ripper and takes a good look at the legacy of the Ripper murders in popular culture. He then reviews the major figures advanced s suspects up to the date of publication and explains why none can seriously be regarded as having been the Ripper. Ultimately, he quite reasonably concludes that the only thing we can really be sure of about Jack the Ripper is that he is dead...

If you are looking for a good introduction to the murders of Jack the Ripper you would be best to avoid books that claim to have *finally* solved the mystery, or advance this or that person as the only good candidate for the killer. My advice would be to start here instead.

The 1960s, writes Roger Kimball, "has become less the name of a decade than a provocation." This incisive critique of that turbulent time won't calm the debate. The Long March will enthrall conservatives who think of themselves as culture warriors and infuriate liberals who still celebrate "the purple decade." Kimball, managing editor of the New Criterion and author of Tenured Radicals, is one of the Right's most articulate writers. He argues forcefully that the pernicious influence of the 1960s can still be felt: "The success of America's recent cultural revolution can be measured not in toppled governments but in shattered values. If we often forget what great changes this revolution brought in its wake, that, too, is a sign of its success: having changed ourselves, we no longer perceive the extent of our transformation."

The Long March proceeds as a series of stimulating essays on important cultural figures and movements, beginning with the Beats. Norman Mailer comes in for an eloquent trashing ("From the late 1940s until the 1980s, he showed himself to be extraordinarily deft at persuading credulous intellectuals to collaborate in his megalomania"), as do any number of counterculture icons. I.F. Stone's articles, writes Kimball, "read like neo-Stalinist equivalents of those multipart articles on staple crops with which The New Yorker used to anesthetize its readers." And of The New York Review of Books, that bastion of elite liberal opinion, Kimball says: "Quite apart from the irresponsibility of the politics, there was an intellectual irresponsibility at work here, a preening, ineradicable frivolousness toward the cultural values that the journal was supposedly created to nurture." There's a distinctly conservative crankiness to Kimball's writing; the jazz of Miles Davis is inevitably "drug-inspired" and rock music "was not only an aesthetic disaster of gigantic proportions: it was also a moral disaster whose effects are nearly impossible to calculate precisely because they are so pervasive." Yet this inclination can lead to fascinating, if arguable, insights about modern American culture: "Everywhere one looks one sees the elevation of youth--that is to say, of immaturity--over experience. It may seem like a small thing that nearly everyone of whatever age dresses in blue jeans now; but the universalization of that sartorial badge of the counterculture speaks volumes."

Kimball's writing is at once highbrow and accessible. Fans of Robert Bork's Slouching Towards Gomorrah and Allan Bloom's The Closing of the American Mind--or readers who have never quite believed all the English professors proclaiming Allen Ginsberg a poetic genius--will find The Long March engrossing and indispensable. --John J. Despite naming his book after Mao's protracted war against Chiang Kai-shek, Kimball spends less time demonstrating that '60s radicalism won its long march and became turn-of-the-millennium orthodoxy than he does denouncing the usual suspects. His targets--the Beats, Norman Mailer, Susan Sontag, liberal university presidents, the Berrigan brothers, Norman O. Brown, Timothy Leary, Eldridge Cleaver, the New York Review of Books, etc.--are relatively easy, for they were often contradictory and illogical. Recalling just how outrageous they were is a sobering corrective to '60s nostalgia. But Kimball also scores his betes noires for sexual misbehavior, which for him means anything except conjugal rights. This obsession leads him to rope the bisexual Paul Goodman into his rogues' gallery, even though Goodman disagreed with nearly all the others. Goodman did, however, place sex at the center of his social and psychological thought. That Kimball can't abide, at some cost to the cogency of his rebuttal of David Allyn's Make Love, Not War , and other wistful backward glances. Ray Olson

Excellently written (though biased) chronicle of the 60's

I'm old enough to remember a little of what went on politically and culturally in the 1960's, but too young to be conversant when it comes to the noted writers, activists and others who set the tone for the "revolution" that took place toward the end of the postwar baby boom. To me, "The Long March" served as a great documentary introduction to this time period that changed the social agenda for many.
Roger Kimball is a conservative who can't stand the influence of the 1960's (actually, the late 50's through the early 70's) in creating what he calls the "liberal establishment" that evolved from that era. His book is a superbly written (and yes, conservatively biased) account of the progression of thought and activism through a little more than a decade, spurred on by a group of influential artists and "avant-garde" intellectuals of the time. The author focuses primarily on the literary aspects of 60's radicalism, with a wealth of commentary on works by authors/poets such as Norman Mailer, Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, Susan Sontag, Timothy Leary and Eldridge Cleaver. In addition, Mr. Kimball chronicles the activism involving the Black Panthers and the student revolts at Berkeley, Cornell and Yale Universities.
Most of Mr. Kimball's efforts are aimed at trashing quotes (literary or otherwise) by every guru that happened to hold sway over the 60's youth and associated political/social "counterculture." I must say, he does a good job of it. He possesses a wonderful way of taking what at the time were much revered literature and speechmaking, and turning them into the most inane, irresponsible drivel one has ever read or heard. The author is particularly unfriendly to pacifists, riot inciters, and advocates of unrestrained sex, drug use, and rock music. Okay, rock 'n' roll ruled, but my views aren't far off from his on the other issues.
What impressed me the most about this book was the author's erudite, witty narrative and his command of the English language. Even though I have no time to get stressed out over what happened 30-40 years ago, I thought this was a great read. That Mr. Kimball's views are right up the conservative alley might leave you either very pleased or horribly distressed. If you happen to think highly of people such as Mailer, Sontag, Leary, Cleaver, or even Tom Hayden, you won't be happy with this book. For others, note the perspective, keep an open mind, and enjoy reading.

Now I Know

Now I know why our schools, colleges, and moral society are in decay. Roger Kimball's The Long March is a tour de force of the factors responsible for this decline. He pieces together the disparate personalities who were deified at the time as purveyors of a new kind of freedom--freedom without responsibility. What they wrought was a society without standards. "Anything Goes" is their motto but woe to the person who questions the results of this kind of lifestyle. Kimball documents their demand for tolerance of all kinds of malordorous behavior yet they are completely intolerant of any criticism. The results are evident throughout our culture. No other book has shown the sources of this decline with such wit and intelligence. The Long March is essential reading for anyone who cares about preserving American culture.

The Greatest Book I've Ever Read.

In my entire life, this is the only book that I've read three times. Upon each perusal it becomes more endearing. The Long March is the most powerful indict of the 1960s and the counterculture that has ever been written. More than any other publication, it is capable of convincing moderates of the need to CONSERVE America and our western tradition as well. Although, I am politically of the same bend as Mr. Kimball, I must admit that this book was not a simple sermon to the parishioners. In my youth, I idolized the beat poets but only knew the true story of their lives after reading his second chapter. The same is true of Marcuse, whose Eros and Civilization along with One-Dimensional Man I devoured and appreciated years ago.

The Long March depicts the full story of the way in which our society was softened up by the likes of Brown, Reich, and Goodman to allow it to blossom into the permanent immaturity of the sixties. An immaturity and a selfishness that still binds us. The pseudo-compassionate hippies brought us multiculturalism and political correctness and currently are the cause of 18 year olds mortgaging their futures by borrowing fortunes in exchange for a Philistine's college education.

As a cultural commentator, Kimball is resolute, spirited, witty, and as observant as an eagle peering down from Mount Rushmore. This is, quite simply, the finest and most important work whose spine I ever cracked.
