Richard Swedberg is Professor of Sociology at Stockholm University where he has been since 1986. During his career he has been a Visiting Scholar at the Department of Sociology, Harvard University (1987/88), the Russell Sage Foundation (1990/91), the Russell Sage Foundation in New York (Summer 1993), and the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies at Harvard University (summers of 1995, 1996, and 1997). He is an editorial member of Administrative Science Quarterly and an advisory member of the journals Current Sociology and Geschichte und Gegenwart: Vierteljahreshefte fur Zeitgeschichte, Gesellschaftsanalyse und politische Bildung.

RIVETING; A GREAT READ!

Employing an energetically enticing writing style, Brown has pulled-off a seemingly impossible feat in universalizing what might have been just a single interest niche book. Brown's thriller, Created Equal, landed solidly in my short list of non-stop-read books; the few and far between ones that keep me riveted to the page and anxious to get on to the next chapter. I absolutely loved it. The only regret that I had in perusing this instantly gripping novel was that it wasn't one hundred pages longer! Brown's pacing was superb. I rank Created Equal with the best of Len Deighton, John LeCarr�, and Dan Brown. Wherever you read, beach, bed, plane, or porch; Created Equal will provide fast-moving entertainment and a relaxing read. I highly recommend it, and hope that Brown has already started to write his next book!

A Very Timely Topic

Literature should exposed the reader to ideas and moral questions. In a griping fashion the author cogently presents the theological and legal cases for women within the Roman Catholic clergy. Before reading this novel, I had no idea there could even be an argument. But the author presents the arguments -- pro and con -- in an entertaining way. I never would have read an essay on the subject, but this book I couldn't put down.

About the Author
Dennis Ruane is a self-published author who has written and published three novels, "Wooden Spoons", "Cataloochee Man", and "The Man in the Room". Although he has made a living as a woodcarver for over thirty years, Dennis habitually wrote in a journal, with the intention of gathering material for future stories. Over this period, he made several attempts to write a novel but was never satisfied with the results until a decade ago when his efforts finally met with success. Two stories followed: "Wooden Spoons" was published in 2006 and "Cataloochee Man" in 2009. Dennis’ third novel, "The Man in the Room" has been five years in the making, during which time the author has gone through some personal changes, resulting in a somewhat autobiographical and especially introspective story.

McClain takes a multifaceted, nuanced look at Japan's last four centuries. A professor of history at Brown University, McClain begins with the investiture of Tokugawa Ieyasu as shogun in 1603, then leads the reader from daimyo castles of the 17th and 18th centuries to the filthy barracks of mine workers in the 19th century, to the refined, "cultured houses" of the emerging urban middle class in the 20th century. Equally adept at describing religious and intellectual currents, economic development, political maneuverings and the special problems faced by women and marginalized groups like Koreans and the Ainu, McClain draws on the most current studies of Japanese history. Throughout, he is evenhanded in his choice of subject matter and source. He acknowledges the contributions of the industrial giants, but gives voice to the rural poor, factory workers and victims of industrial pollution. He describes the geopolitical realities that drove Japan to empire but also unflinchingly details the horrors of war. More than a mere description of how Japan became a leading nation of the 20th century, this is a story with room for the pronouncements of emperors, the poetry of Basho and the demands of labor leaders. A newcomer to the subject may be daunted at first by the sheer volume of information, but McClain soon puts the reader at ease with his mastery of the subject and his clear, precise prose. McClain, professor of history at Brown University, has done an admirable job of tracking four centuries of Japanese history during which the nation emerged from feudal isolation and became a dominant power in East Asia. As McClain illustrates, the Japanese were never subjected to the indignities or the benefits of European imperialism. Thus, they were able to harvest what they deemed useful from the West while maintaining a remarkable degree of cultural solidarity. McClain's descriptions of the political changes during the Tokugawa era and the Meiji Restoration provide interesting perspectives, but McClain is at his best when he views Japan from the bottom up, eloquently illustrating how the daily lives of ordinary people gradually changed. This is a well-written, well-researched, and easily readable survey of the modern history of a fascinating and important nation--even more important now that Japanese nationalism is on the rise and a more assertive foreign policy is a likely by-product. A Synthetic Review of Japanese History...

The last few years have seen a spate of new histories covering the last three hundred years of Japanese history. From Herbert Bix's and John Dower's Pulitizer Prize-winning looks at Japan in the Twentieth Century to Marius Jansen and now James McClain's examinations of post-Sengoku ('Warring States') societal evolution, Japanese history is again attracting the attention of mainstream American readers.
McClain's new book takes us from Tokugawa Ieyasu's country-uniting victory at Sekigahara in 1600 (with a brief stop to quickly explain the millennium of history leading up to the battle) to Yoshiro Mori's cabinet of 2000-2001. It covers political history, governmental development, economic evolution, societal change, educational systems and intellectual debates through this entire span of time giving a very synthetic view of Japanese history.
If anything, McClain's book weighs in a bit more heavily on the economic and governmental development side of the equation, leaving political history to books that have covered it many times before. He shows all of modern Japanese history (defined as 1600 AD to the present) as dynamic, evolving and never quite fully under the control of any one person or group. A view that has gained a great deal of credence in modern years, it makes this history of Japan very timely.
Unsurprisingly, the past century of Japanese history takes up the lion's share of the book and he shows the tragic mistakes of the century in much the same way he showcases the triumphs. If any one thesis appears in his book, it is that Japan continues to evolve, hangs on to the past and appears to be at the cusp of a new societal evolution as the century ticks over. The first two are hardly news, and while the third may be a little controversial in some circles, these views merit reiteration in a historical retelling.
On the whole, McClain's book makes for a very necessary addition to the available reference works on Japanese history, especially given the economic and societal bent to his writing. It doesn't hurt that the work is quite readable as well. If I ever teach a course on Japanese history, this book will serve as the core historical text.

The best history of modern Japan (1603 forward)...

McClain has fashioned a highly detailed, sophisticated, and complex history of Japan from 1603 to the present. The historiography is superb (he obviously is totally bilingual and is fluent in Japanese sources). The history is both descriptive (chronological, social, political, economic, family/personal) as well as analytic (how social structure affected the rise of industrial society, for example). The overall effect is to make Japanese history clear and comprehensible. The people of Japan stand out in distinct relief.
I was puzzled that the Boston Globe reviewer was much cooler toward this book than I think most readers are or will be. McClain's history will stand the test of time.

Comprehensive history since the 17th century.

If you are looking for an excellent resource on the history of Japan in the past 4 centuries, I recommend this book highly. It does an excellent job in tracing the tortuous path that wove from Japan's feudal fiefdom society to the current modern parliamentary democracy. In addition to the governmental and military matters that are generally covered, there is notable space dedicated to the arts and the contributions of women, peasants and others not normally found in history books. The maps and illustrations are adequate, and do help to support the text. Highly Recommended.

About the Author
One of India's most cherished figures, Rabindranath Tagore (18611914) was a novelist, shortstory writer, poet, essayist, painter, educationist and thinker, the first nonEuropean to be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1913. It shakes you away from your rigid beliefs.

Gora is inteligent, energetic and a strong believer. He believes in believing and acting for those beliefs. He is strong he is aggressive. He thinks that the strong belief can bring in all the good. Strong belief in God, Culture, country, ... will automatically make them self confident and will lead to progress. Which will eliminate the problems for the society. He subscribes to the beliefs, that he thinks are birth right to him. He is strong Hindu, He is strong Indian, Strong __, ... At the end he comes to know that his all the beliefs are baseless. He is devastated! The meaning of his existence was closely bound to his beliefs, but there is nothing to believe. What can he survive on? He gains new insights and so do we.
All the women characters are simply great!! Which is very characteristic of Tagore and Sharad Chandra.

Typical Tagore, untypical for its times

To truly appreciate this book one needs to have some fair idea of the social, religious and political situation of India during the late nineteenth-early twentieth century. This book revolutionised the thinking and beliefs of the then contemporary modern thinkers and intellectuals, laying the foundation of the idea of a secular Indian society. The underlying theme is the essence of being a human, and very few in the history of mankind could find words that brings this out so beautifully (more so in the original Bengali, much of it is lost in the English translation). The reader undergoes the journey of self discovery along with the main protagonist, Gora. The beauty of Tagore's writing is that the unpredicatability and the vulnerability of the characters make them so natural and real, bringing out the inherent self-contradictions of human beings until they discover their true self and then all the cunfusions and the contradictions in one's own faith vanish. One finds one's place in this cosmos, realises the implication of being a human, experiences the beauty of life. And this makes the appeal of the book timeless.

Kindle edition a no-no

Don't buy this kindle edition. The book is a classic in Indian literature, but this edition has the worst translation. The author has translated bengali into english word to word, with no semblance of grammar, sentence structure or meaning. Better get the penguin paperback edition, and not this mess.

Highly recommended for new mothers

This book is a great reference for new mothers and mothers to be. It has everything you need to know about newborns to toddlers. This will help you learn how to take care of your newborn and what you need to do and what you should NOT do. The best part about this book is the useful tips on how to feed your baby, how to bathe them and the brief explanation of the baby's developmental stages. It will help the new mommies and daddies on what to expect during the those stages.

I highly recommend this book

I used this book to get through some of my hardest moments as a young parent. I found countless new perspectives and encouragement to improve my own parenting through this book, especially how to deal my son's tantrum. This book has helpful insights into children's development and eye opening questions about my own assumptions helped me reflect about my values and the parent I want to be.

The book is brimming with essential child rearing pearls. Reading a book on parenting is the simple part yet applying its standards is quite another. We all want to be great parents. Although we try, sometimes there are situations that happen that we are not prepared for. This book is a great guide on helping parents with those situations. The author explains these parenting techniques in an easy to read format. I was able to adapt many of these techniques into my current parenting and I have seen the difference already. The author did a great job.

I highly recommend this book to any parents or guardian, and believe that the valuable information given is never too late to learn, because as an older brother it has completely changed my perspective.

The suggestions and advises included here are a proper and perfect collection to make a proper decision, give birth the child properly, raise your child. Feeding is a very important thing for a new born baby. This book has discussed about the feeding to make a correct and cautious decision. You will learn to take a proper care of the infant like diapering, swaddling your baby, bathing, sleeping from the books deeply. Both mother and father should take note of the issues which are to sleep when he/she sleeps and listen to their cries to identify what they need and share the load. In the last two chapter describes the care of the baby from the infant to toddler initially and later.
