Great reference for those needing a guide to get them up to speed on the topic
By Ben Rothke
Any organization that has a sizeable web presence, especially if it involves e-commerce, will inevitably become a victim of some sort of Internet malfeasance. Contrary to popular management belief, knowing how to effectively deal with, respond to, and recover from such incidents is not a trivial endeavor. Nothing proved that more than the Sony breach of 2014.
In Investigating Internet Crimes: An Introduction to Solving Crimes in Cyberspace, authors Todd Shipley and Art Bowker provide the reader with an effective framework and methodology on how to deal with online incidents and crimes. The book is a thorough primer to the fundamentals of the topic. It is light on theory, but heavy on real-world practicality.
The book focuses on using software tools to investigate Internet-based crimes and explains how these tools can be used during an investigation. The authors astutely note that the reader should not get caught up in the investigative tools themselves, and that having a proper focus on how to approach an incident is more important than the tools. Good tools in the hands of a clueless corporate investigator are, for the most part, useless, and that is what the book exhorts the reader to avoid.
The authors also offer advice on how to ensure any evidence gathered is admissible in court. Investigators need to know that being careless with evidence can stop a prosecution in its tracks.
Both authors and technical editor Nick Selby have decades of law enforcement and real-world experience, so the book is authoritative and practical. For those needing a guide to get them up to speed on the topic, Investigating Internet Crimes is a great place to start.

Good Overview of the Topics, Getting Started Guide
By Eric Chou
This book is an overview on what the title suggested, investigating Internet crimes. With such a broad topic, it generally covers each topic briefly to be 'up and running' with lots of reference links at the end of the chapter. It covers all the major topics, from the alphabet soups of security agencies, to how the Internet works, to collecting and making court-sustaining digital footprint. It even has a page for 'Chat Acronyms' such as BRB, LOL, and text emoticons. It actually brings a smile to my face thinking some 40-yr old cop studying that emoticon page in some dimly lightly backroom trying to catch the bad guys.
As an IT professional, many of the topics such as IP address, DHCP, MAC address, and tools related to Ping, Traceroute were already familiar to me. What was really useful, was the introduction of legally admissible evidence, the different state and federal jurisdictions, and documenting online evidences. It was also handy to be introduced to some of the companies and tools geared toward this particular purpose, such as WebCase and PortableApps.com. The books tries to cover both free and commercial tools, with a bit of a bias toward free tools.
I believe this is a handy book to have, take some of the chapters as 'good to know', while treating some of the chapters more in depth, reading the references at the end. As with many projects, picking the right tools was half of the battle, getting started was sometimes cumbersome, and this book serves as a good starting point for anybody interested in the topic.
