An amazing story

I received this book as an ARC for an honest review. This is not a taboo book it is a BDSM type of relationship.

In this book we get the story of Kimberly and Charles. We have seen how this couple has their HEA in the other three books. In this one we find out how it all began. In this book Kimberly is fighting her feelings for Charles she knows that she might have stronger feelings than friendship but doesn't want to act on them because he is still married to Vanessa. Though she feels bad for all the problems that Vanessa gives him she knows unless he leaves her on his own they can't be together. However when something happens so to Charles in Iraq everything changes.

Charles has always been the kind of man to stand by his woman and honor his commitments but he can't be in this marriage any more. No matter how much he gives she is doing nothing but verbally abusing him and he won't have his son growing up watching this happen to his own father. So to pay off their debt and help him to afford a divorce he closes down his construction company and goes to work in Iraq for a 2 year commitment. Shortly after arriving though he ends up with a cut and an infection that threatens to take his life. During this time he is e-mailing back and forth with Kimberly and they are developing a bond that he has never felt in his marriage.

The question remains what will happen when he comes home from Iraq? What will he loose from this infection? This is an amazing story about finding love when it is the worst possible timing and fighting for it with your last breath. This is an amazing story and after reading the first three books in this series and seeing how Kimberly helps all of her friends it is amazing to see how she and Charles got to where they are. I would highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone this is an amazing story

Lovely Story!!!

I adore Normandie’s Daddy series!!! This story was a rare treat. It included characters from her other books. The cool thing about this story is that it can be read as a stand-alone, as it is a prequel to the others. I recommend you read this and the other books in this series to enjoy the full effect…each story is something special!!! I really enjoyed the development of the two characters…Charles and Kimberly. They seems to complement one another and the love story was so sweet. I hate hate hate Vanessa…she is a very cruel, spiteful and verbally abusive woman. Of course Charles sees a better life with Kimberly and the two of them fall in love….their relationship gets steamier and steamier. It was so cool how their love grew, and they both discovered they liked the "daddy - little girl" relationship. I hope there is a sequel to this since I want to see a nice resolution. Bravo Miss Normandie…awesome job once again!!!

Emotional, Sexy Love Story

This story has everything a reader could want – a hero who makes you swoon, a heroine you can root for, and a wicked witch you want to throttle! This book tells how the Daddy’s Girl Club began, and we meet many of the characters we’ve grown to love in books 1-3. It was fun to see how they meet each other, and now I understand why Sloane has never been a fan of Charmaine.

But there’s more to this romance than just insanely sexy encounters. This book is an emotionally charged read about a man deployed to a war zone and what it’s like for the woman he loves. Charles is an incredible hero, a bad-ass Ranger with a sensitive side. (I died when he said he was working on his pain tolerance!) The tenderness and vulnerability he shows in his letters to Kimberly is heart-wrenching. Not only a much-anticipated installment of Alleman’s hot Daddy Dom series, but also a great military romance.

An example of the southern, or chuanqi, genre of opera from Ming dynasty China (14th to 17th centuries), The Peony Pavilion, completed in 1598, was Tang's masterpiece and, according to Birch's preface, a profound meditation on the nature of love. Selected scenes have become near necessities of any traditional Chinese opera repertoire. The tale concerns a cloistered girl and young scholar who fall in love in dreams. After the heroine pines away from longing, their devotion transcends death, resulting in her resurrection and a happy union. Birch (Univ. of California, Berkeley) has captured the beauty and elegance of Tang's original drama, conveying even the humor of subtle puns. two-volume Anthology of Chinese Literature, Stories from a Ming Collection, Scenes for Mandarins, Mistress and Maid, and Tales from China.

Catherine Swatek is Associate Professor of Asian Studies, University of British Columbia, and author of Peony Pavilion Onstage: Four Centuries in the Career of a Chinese Drama.

Cyril Birch is Professor Emeritus of East Asian Languages and Cultures, University of California, Berkeley. His other publications include the two-volume Anthology of Chinese Literature, Chinese Narrative, Scenes for Mandarins, Mistress and Maid, and Tales from China.

What a trip!

One of the most interesting, fun, and engrossing books I've ever read--literally going to Hades and back, with a host of humorous characters along the way. "Scabby Turtle," anyone? You learn a lot about traditional Chinese culture, as well... views on the afterlife, the role of bureaucracy, etc. It's a shame there aren't more English translations of Xianzu Tang's works, and it's an even further shame there aren't yet Kindle versions of the few additional ones that exist. Get on it, Amazon!

a delightful love story with lots of action

I am not familiar with Chinese literature and this was a wonderful introduction. As just a "read", this had all the action, love and suspense that one could want. It is a very readable translation, and once into the story it became very difficult to set it down. I would recommend it to anyone that likes a delightful story well told.

This book provides a pioneering and provocative exploration of the rich synergies between adaptation studies and translation studies and is the first genuine attempt to discuss the rather loose usage of the concepts of translation and adaptation in terms of theatre and film. At the heart of this collection is the proposition that translation studies and adaptation studies have much to offer each other in practical and theoretical terms and can no longer exist independently from one another. As a result, it generates productive ideas within the contact zone between these two fields of study, both through new theoretical paradigms and detailed case studies. Such closely intertwined areas as translation and adaptation need to encounter each other’s methodologies and perspectives in order to develop ever more rigorous approaches to the study of adaptation and translation phenomena, challenging current assumptions and prejudices in terms of both. The book includes contributions as diverse yet interrelated as Bakhtin’s notion of translation and adaptation, Bollywood adaptations of Shakespeare’s Othello, and an analysis of performance practice, itself arguably an adaptive practice, which uses a variety of languages from English and Greek to British and International Sign-Language. As translation and adaptation practices are an integral part of global cultural and political activities and agendas, it is ever more important to study such occurrences of rewriting and reshaping. By exploring and investigating interdisciplinary and cross-cultural perspectives and approaches, this volume investigates the impact such occurrences of rewriting have on the constructions and experiences of cultures while at the same time developing a rigorous methodological framework which will form the basis of future scholarship on performance and film, translation and adaptation.

Awesome Gift, Great Book!

I've had so much fun with this book! Based on your own Birthday you can look up "Your Birthdays for Love," "Your Soul Mates," "Your Fatal Attractions" and "Your Challenging Birthdays" to see what they might mean now or what they may have meant in the past.
Years ago when I was living in LA, I had my astrological chart done by this Author, Beth Scott, who still does them today at [...]. Her insight was spot-on and I have never forgotten it. I was really excited to see she had written a book. The beginning of the book was my favorite part ~ where there are explanations to help the reader interpret the categories and what the dates mean. I hope this gifted astrologer continues to write more books with even more insight into the signs and categories. If you've ever had a challenging relationship and couldn't understand why, this book could
help. This book is a lot of fun and great to share with friends. I've been looking up my birthday and everyone else's too! It's addicting!

About the Author
Stephanie J. Coopman (Ph.D., University of Kentucky) is Professor of Communication Studies at San Jose State University. She served as department chair for five years and chair of the SJSU University Council of Chairs and Directors for three years. In addition to teaching public speaking since the start of her career, she has conducted numerous training sessions on public speaking and communication pedagogy. Professor Coopman has published her research in a variety of scholarly outlets, including FIRST MONDAY, COMMUNICATION EDUCATION, WESTERN JOURNAL OF COMMUNICATION, COMMUNICATION YEARBOOK, AMERICAN COMMUNICATION JOURNAL, JOURNAL OF BUSINESS COMMUNICATION, and MANAGEMENT COMMUNICATION QUARTERLY. She contributes 20 percent of her royalties from the sale of PUBLIC SPEAKING: THE EVOLVING ART to the Robert R. Zimmermann "Dr. Bob" Scholarship fund for students and the Dr. Robert R. "Dr. Bob" Zimmermann Endowed Teaching Chair Award for faculty at Delta College in University Center, Michigan.

James Lull (Ph.D. University of Wisconsin-Madison) is Professor Emeritus of Communication Studies at San Jose State University. Winner of the National Communication Association's Golden Anniversary Monograph Award, he has taught public speaking for more than twenty-five years. An internationally recognized leader in media studies, cultural analysis, and evolutionary communication, Professor Lull is the author or editor of twelve books with translations into many languages as well as articles published in the top journals in the field. Dr. Lull holds honorary doctorates and professorships from several universities in Europe and Latin America where he regularly gives plenary addresses and seminars.

A Compelling Place to Visit

I visited the Garden Tomb in December, 2008. The experience was spiritually inspiring and intellectually fascinating. The tomb itself has been in the keeping of a British Trust since its discovery in 1867. The tour guides (all UK volunteers) offer some compelling evidence that this could be Joseph of Arimathea's family tomb (immediately adjacent to Golgatha). But they also balance that evidence with other research that questions that possibility. What is not in question is the authenticity of the tomb in the context of its time. As such, it is fascinating to see because even if it is not the actual tomb of Jesus, it is very much like it. I bought this book at the Garden Tomb Bookshop and read it on the plane home. The book is divided into three parts. The first two parts explore the events surrounding the crucifixion and resurrection, and the history of the Garden Tomb itself. The third section delves into the significance of these events and (for me) is a subject better left to one's own belief and perspective. I didn't finish the third section. But the first two sections are certainly worth reading. The photographs and diagrams give you a feel for the place that codifies what the guides shared. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, especially in the wake of visiting this wondrous place.

A Pleasant Bit Of Speculation

Having visited the Holy Land in January of 2000 I was immediately drawn in by the cover of this book, with it's picture of the Garden Tomb (a possible alternative site of the tomb of Christ). Walker presents a nice chronology of the events of the weekend that changed the world (the weekend of the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ), that is a mix of info from the Bible and informed speculation. I used this book for a Sunday School class during Lent and it was well received. The speculation can be presented as speculation and makes for the beginning of some interesting discussions. I'd recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the crucifixion and resurrection placed in historical context, but especially believe it would be of interest to those who have visited Jerusalem and have seen both the church of the Holy Sepulcher and the Garden tomb.

Good Story, Study & Conclusion

This is a good book. I purchased a copy while in Israel... Part 1 is a good telling of "The Story", Part 2 is "The Setting" = Come see the place where he lay. He is not here; for he has been raised. Matt 28:6. Part 2 talks about both locations and history of both the Holy Sepulchre & Garden Tomb. Part 3 "The Significance", this concludes the book. This book was so good I had to buy another copy when I got home from Amazon so I can keep my 'Israel' copy :)

This autobiography, which was originally published in 1972, the year Robinson died, is not about baseball: it's about the deep commitment that Robinson made to achieve justice for himself and all Americans. He recalls his years at UCLA, where he became the school's first four-letter athlete and met his future wife, Rachel. With the advent of WWII he was drafted into the army, became a lieutenant and was court-martialed for refusing to move to the back of a bus. He was honorably discharged. He played for the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues until he was recruited by Branch Rickey of the Brooklyn Dodgers. In 1947 Robinson broke the color line in the major leagues and suffered terrible abuse for doing so. He discusses his relationships with the sports figures he admired, like Rickey and teammate Pee Wee Reese, and also recalls his run-ins with those he did not like, such as Dodger owner Walter O'Malley, who was "viciously antagonistic," and sportswriter Dick Young, a "racial bigot." Much of the book, written with freelancer Duckett, focuses on Robinson's political involvements after his career ended in 1956 and his friendships with such diverse characters as Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, William Buckley and Nelson Rockefeller. The most wrenching episodes in the book deal with Jackie Jr., who overcame his heroin addiction only to be killed in an automobile accident at age 24 in 1971. I Never Had It Made is Jackie Robinson's own candid, hard-hitting autobiographical account of what it took to become the first black man in American history to play in the major leagues. I Never Had It Made recalls Robinson's early years and influences: his time at UCLA, where he became the school's first four-letter athlete, his army stint during World War II, when he challenged Jim Crow laws and narrowly escaped court martial; his years of frustration, on and off the field, with the Negro Leagues; and finally that fateful day when Branch Rickey of the Brooklyn Dodgers proposed what became known as the "Noble Experiment" -- Robinson would step up to bat to integrate and revolutionize baseball. Touches the surface of a complex man

I was interested in reading "I Never Had It Made" after seeing the movie "42". There are more than a few biographies about Jackie Robinson, but I wanted to hear the story from the man himself. The first third of the book is quite riveting, as Mr. Robinson recounts his story of breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball. The story slows down once Mr. Robinson transitioned from baseball to private life with some highs and lows. Particularly heartbreaking is reading about his relationship with his son, how his son became addicted to drugs, eventually overcame his addiction, and passed away in a tragic car accident just as his life was beginning to turn around. It's clear that Mr. Jackie Robinson is a principled man, and fought for civil rights in the battleground of business and politics. There were several famous political figures he called out in his book as people he couldn't support, but didn't elaborate as to why. I would have liked to know more specifics about his view of these people.

Interesting insight

This book provided interesting insight to the thinking of a man who made a mark on American history.

We frequently hear about Jackie Robinson as the baseball icon who broke racial barriers in a segregated institution. We seldom hear of his many contributions to the business and political world. His autobiography gives personal insight to his life and the impact he had in the socio-political arena.

Jackie was an outspoken advocate of his personal beliefs. He took on many challenges and sometimes suffered the consequences of those struggles. The reader gets to experience Jack Robinson as a dynamic individual who is sometimes bitter, sometimes apologetic, sometimes sexist, sometimes full of pain, and sometimes proud. He discusses his views, his motivations, his reasoning, and his failures.

The book reads as if the manuscript was typed verbatim from a tape recorded story of Jackie's life. As times, it lacks sufficient historical perspective that would provide greater information and understanding for the reader.

One of the short comings of the book is the lack of footnotes. Jackie refers to a variety of documents including newspaper articles, but fails to provide footnotes so that the reader can refer to and research the source. Footnotes provide an excellent tool to look for and obtain more information on the subject. Due to the fact that there are many such references, they should have been available. It would have also been a plus to see copies of some of the letters written to Jackie by Rockefeller, Nixon, and other historical figures that are discussed at length in the book.

I would have also like to know more about Jackie's early years, such as, the schools he attended and how he entered UCLA. I am sure that there was more to his entry into the UC system than merely filling out an application. There is also limited information about this mother and his siblings, or whether his father ever attempted to contact his famous and outspoken son.

Although, we hear from the man himself, upon finishing the book, I felt as if the work was incomplete. It feels more like a work in progress than a finished memoir of a man who attempted and accomplished so much.

There have been a number of instances in which I have found autobiographies to come across as rather disjointed, varying in tone by page and by chapter, particularly when it comes to those co-authored by individuals who are not themselves subjects of the stories within. To what extent this is the result of editorializing or revisionism on the part of either subject or co-author, I never know for certain. With "I Never Had It Made," I felt that, while I could not personally discern any significant difference between the flesh and blood individual and the form apparent in the written word from any first- or second-hand experience (being born 15 years after his passing and all), I suspected this to be a natural extension of Jackie Robinson's persona. As a ballplayer, Jackie endured countless threats, taunts, and much worse, for the sake of Branch Rickey's "noble experiment." As a man, Jackie is incredible effusive when it comes to his on-the-field achievements as member of a World Series-winning Brooklyn Dodgers team and well-deserving inductee to the Baseball Hall of Fame. If you are looking for the story of Jackie Robinson's life, i.e. the chronology of events from birth to baseball, success and fame, to activist and icon status, well, this is probably not that book. What is perhaps most striking, in my opinion, is the manner in which the tone shifts repeatedly from Jackie's humble perspective as a son/husband/father/soldier/ballplayer/businessman/activist, deflecting praise for achievements that seem to have come about as a natural extension of his determination and effort to prove himself worthy in seemingly every personal endeavor, to his stream-of-consciousness sort of reflections on the choices (and admitted mistakes) he made, often against the will of the pigheaded masses, or those closest to him. What comes through most in this book is evidently Jackie's voice. While Jackie does not sugar-coat things, he does not tend to dwell on past transgressions against him. While he does not proclaim justice to have been faithfully served in his lifetime, nor wildly optimistic sentiments about the likelihood that it shall have come to be upheld in his children's, he consistently emphasizes the beliefs and values that have guided him throughout a life that, although extraordinary in its accomplishments, is remarkably ordinary in its narrative of struggle and overcoming of one's obstacles. That is not to detract from the transcendent stature of Jackie Robinson's legacy, which he earned in spite of 'never having it made.' Rather, in much the same way he enlightens readers to the differences of opinion he had with the likes of Dr. King and Malcolm X, or common ground he shared with Nixon and Rockefeller, Jackie does not shy away from contradiction, and embodies the message of Matthew 5:14 ("You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.") that has so frequently been misappropriated by politicians and evangelists. If Jackie Robinson is to be considered a shining example of American ideals (and I firmly believe that he is), a flawed but beautiful fusion of both conservative and liberal values that seems particularly poignant these days, then I believe that this book should be as widely shared and read as humanly possible.
